Chairman, President & CEO
Putney's Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jean Hoffman, is a successful entrepreneur with a strong track record in the pharmaceutical industry. Ms. Hoffman previously founded Newport Strategies, Inc. in 1990 and built that company into the world leader in product targeting and sourcing systems for the generic pharmaceutical industry before it was acquired by Thomson Reuters in 2004.
Following the sale of Newport, Ms. Hoffman founded Q Street Advisors, Inc., a consulting and advisory company serving the global generic industry. She has also served as one of the founding members of the Board of the Small Enterprise Growth Fund, a venture capital fund in Maine.
Her career in the global pharmaceutical industry began in 1980 by advising pharmaceutical companies on the establishment of business with China and Chinese API manufacturers on exporting to the U.S. In 1982, Ms. Hoffman joined the Far East-based, Swiss-headquartered, Zuellig Group, initially as Manager, China Business for MWM Chemical. After becoming General Manager, China for Zuellig Group North America in 1984, she led business development activity in China on behalf of Zuellig subsidiaries in South East Asia and the U.S., including the Gold Coin Group of feed mills and FEZ animal health companies. Ms. Hoffman was named Chief Executive Officer and a member of the board of directors of ZetaPharm in 1987, a Zuellig subsidiary. There she developed a new strategy and business plan to turn the company around by focusing on the then-nascent U.S. generic pharmaceutical industry.
Ms. Hoffman graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College in Maine with degrees in East Asian History and Government and Legal Studies. Ms. Hoffman studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and completed executive education programs at Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Columbia University Graduate School of Business. Ms. Hoffman is a member of the Executive Advisory Committee of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Generic Medicines. She was named a 2011 Mass High Tech Business Leader "Woman to Watch"" and a MaineBiz 2009 "Woman to Watch"" in Science and Technology.
TJ Dupree
Chief Operating Officer
TJ Dupree brings strategic vision and operational expertise as Putney's Chief Operating Officer, joining the team as the senior executive responsible for guiding the company's commercial growth and propelling the Putney brand to the top of the companion animal generics industry. Mr. Dupree has strategic and operational responsibility for all of Putney's commercial operations including sales, marketing, service and global supply chain.
Mr. Dupree has more than fifteen years of experience as a commercial leader and business strategist, most recently as Corporate Vice President, Companion Animal Group at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. where he drove significant revenue growth and operating profit expansion for both the capital and service revenue sectors. As a member of IDEXX's senior leadership team, Mr. Dupree led commercial activities and drove new product launches into the market.
Prior to joining IDEXX in 2003, Mr. Dupree was Manager for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he led cross-functional teams of client and BCG staff, providing consulting in areas of strategy and achievement of operational excellence to senior management and boards of directors in the US and Europe for a broad range of international companies. Mr. Dupree held several management positions at Bath Iron Works Corporation between 1990 and 1994.
Mr. Dupree graduated cum laude in two majors from Colby College, Economics and German, and earned an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.
Jennifer Spokes Johansson
Vice President, Regulatory and Counsel
Ms. Johansson leads the Company’s Regulatory Affairs efforts, including FDA strategy, submissions, and communications, as well as related compliance and legal matters. She has 14 years of pharmaceutical regulatory and legal experience. Ms. Johansson was formerly the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for Andrx, a leading human specialty pharmaceutical company focused on generics and pharmaceutical delivery. Before being asked to lead Andrx’s Regulatory Affairs department, Ms. Johansson held the position of Counsel in Andrx’s Legal Department and was responsible for regulatory legal matters.
Prior to joining Andrx, Ms. Johansson served for six years as an Associate in a leading food and drug regulatory practice at the law firm of Patton Boggs, LLP in Washington, DC. Ms. Johansson started her career in laboratory research at the federal government’s National Institutes of Health.
Ms. Johansson holds a J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston University School of Law, where she was an editor on the Boston University Law Review. Ms. Johansson graduated with an A.B., cum laude with Distinction, in Biology from Duke University. She is a member of the bar of Massachusetts and Washington, DC. Ms. Johansson completed executive education programs at Columbia University Graduate School of Business and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She currently serves as an officer in the Generic Animal Drug Alliance (www.gadaonline.org).
Ted Smolenski
Vice President, Strategic Portfolio Planning
Ted Smolenski leads Putney's core portfolio process to analyze and recommend future drug products, identify partnership opportunities for portfolio products and drive business deals to successful close.
Prior to joining Putney, Mr. Smolenski was Senior Director of Portfolio Management and Strategy at Impax Laboratories, where he played a lead role in product selection, pipeline planning, forecasting, business development, alliance management, Paragraph Four settlements, and API sourcing. While at Impax, Mr. Smolenski ‘s recommendations led to dozens of product additions to the company's pipeline, including eight that ultimately resulted in first-to-file ANDAs. Earlier in his career, Mr. Smolenski was a successful sales leader in the pharmaceutical industry during his tenure at Merck, where he managed a territory with over $4 million in annual sales.
Mr. Smolenski holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Delaware.
Dr. Anthony Lucas
Vice President, Product Development
Dr. Lucas is accountable for delivery of Putney’s pipeline, scientific strategy, and project management (time, cost, resources) involving CRO and development partners. Dr. Lucas joined Putney in 2010 from the Elanco Animal Health division of Eli Lilly, where he spent six years involved in acquisitions, product development, clinical studies, Six Sigma implementation, and due diligence of new business opportunities. His last position at Elanco was Group Leader, Companion Animal Acquisitions. Prior to that, Dr. Lucas was Due Diligence Leader and a Senior Research Scientist, Companion Animal Product Development Team. As Elanco’s first R&D Black Belt, Dr. Lucas co-led the successful implementation of Six Sigma into Elanco to improve the quality, value and speed of Elanco R&D and Global Marketing processes.
Dr. Lucas is a graduate of Elanco’s Accelerated Leadership Development Program and achieved Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. He completed post-doctoral studies in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology (School of Pharmacy) after earning a PhD. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Centre for Pharmaceutical Research, School of Pharmaceutical, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, University of South Australia. Dr Lucas also holds a Graduate Certificate of Management, Deakin University, Victoria, Australia. Dr. Lucas earned a Master of Veterinary Studies from The University of Melbourne, Australia. He is a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and earned his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, Second Class (Division A) Merit Honours, (equivalent to DVM) as well as a Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Biology), both at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia. Dr. Lucas spent three years in small animal veterinary practice in Australia.
Dr. Lucas is the Initiator and co-chair of the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics (AAVPT)/CVM workshop on the veterinary drug approval process and a member of the organizing committee for the 17th AAVPT Biennial Symposia as well as Secretary/Treasurer of the AAVPT and a Co-founding Board member of the Veterinary Pharmacology Research Foundation and Treasurer of the AAVPT/CVM workshop on Bioequivalence.
Patrick Powell
Vice President, Sales
As head of Putney's sales team, Patrick Powell drives national sales of new and existing Putney veterinary approved products and oversees customer service. He has twenty years of sales experience in the animal health industry, most recently as Director of Sales-East for Bayer Animal Health. In that role, Mr. Powell supervised eight regional business managers, developed and implemented sales training materials, and developed sales incentive programs for the companion animal business unit.
Prior to joining Bayer Animal Health, Patrick Powell served as a regional sales manager for Fort Dodge Animal Health, where he won several internal awards for consistently exceeding sales targets. Mr. Powell entered the animal health industry as the Kansas Territory Sales Manager for Solvay Animal Health where he drove year-on-year double digit growth of sales for companion animal, equine, and livestock products.
Mr. Powell earned a B.S. in Agricultural Business from Northwest Missouri State University. He has completed executive leadership and management programs with the Center for Creative Leadership, the University of Notre Dame, and the Gettysburg Leadership Experience.
Chris Lewis
Vice President, Finance
Chris Lewis joins Putney’s senior leadership team as Vice President of Finance, bringing over twenty years experience in corporate financial forecasting, reporting and analysis. Mr. Lewis is responsible for managing Putney’s financial processes and controls, and for expanding its financial planning and analysis capabilities.
Mr. Lewis’ previous experience in animal health includes twelve years at IDEXX Laboratories where he worked until 2009, most recently as Senior Finance Manager for the Production Animal Segment. During his tenure, Mr. Lewis provided financial leadership and acquisition due diligence that supported business segment revenue growth from $20million to $85million. On a corporate-wide basis, Mr. Lewis customized and implemented analytical software that streamlined budgeting capabilities as the
company grew from $200million to $1billion in revenues. Most recently, Mr. Lewis has been Chief Financial Officer for Tricorp Federal Credit Union.
Mr. Lewis earned a Bachelors of Science in Business and Management from Westbrook College in Portland, Maine and an MBA in Finance from Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Bert Mileski
Vice President of Quality
As a pharmaceutical industry professional with over twenty years of diversified quality, technical and managerial expertise, Bert Mileski joins Putney's senior leadership team as Vice President of Quality. In that role, Mr. Mileski is responsible for strategic leadership and execution of Putney's quality assurance programs as it ramps up both its R&D and commercial manufacturing operations.
Mr. Mileski distinguished himself during his twelve year career in quality assurance at Barr Laboratories, where he worked in positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as Vice President of Quality for US Operations. Until he left the company in 2009, Mr. Mileski led Barr Laboratories' corporate quality strategy, implementing new quality systems and overseeing quality performance during facility optimization and product integration after Barr acquired Pliva.
Prior to joining Barr Laboratories, Mr. Mileski was part of the Lederle Laboratories team that took a solid dosage manufacturing and packaging plant from start-up through commercial operations. During his five years at Lederle, Mr. Mileski moved from production to quality assurance, where he developed SOPs, coordinated and delivered cGMP training, performed internal and external audits, and managed finished product release activities. Mr. Mileski began his career in pharmaceuticals at Abbott Laboratories where he gained direct supervisory experience in the manufacture of large volume parental (LVP) sterile solutions.
Mr. Mileski earned a Bachelors of Arts in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW).
David Doll
Senior Vice President, Business Development
David Doll leads Putney's business development team, identifying strategic product opportunities, overseeing acquisitions, and negotiating new production partnerships. Mr. Doll brings thirty years of experience in health care sales, marketing and business development, with an emphasis in human generic pharmaceuticals.
Prior to leaving Impax Laboratories, Inc. in 2008, Mr. Doll served as executive vice president of commercial operations, quadrupling the division's net income in just two years. During his over 7 year tenure at Impax, Mr. Doll successfully negotiated long-term development and supply agreements with seven separate pharmaceutical companies. In 2008, Mr. Doll started his own company, Doll Consulting, LLC, where he remains the majority stakeholder.
Mr. Doll also has extensive experience in top line sales, acquired while he served as senior director of managed care at Merck & Co. Inc., where he managed a national account team responsible for annual sales of approximately $2 billion. While at Merck, as General Manager of West Point Pharma, Mr. Doll increased the generic pharmaceutical division's revenue by 331% and profits by 513%.
Mr. Doll earned a B.S. in Commerce from Rider University and an MBA in Pharmaceutical Marketing from Saint Joseph's University. He has completed the Strategic Thinking and Management for Competitive Advantage Program from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Jamie Burks
Senior Director, Marketing
As Senior Director of Marketing, Jamie Burks develops and executes marketing strategies to drive sales of Putney's products. Ms. Burks is responsible for marketing communications, advertising and promotional programs in support of Sales and Veterinary Services, as well as market analysis for products identified through the portfolio process.
During her seventeen year career in both human and veterinary pharmaceutical marketing, Ms. Burks has worked in a wide range of capacities, including sales, marketing, advertising and Big 5 consulting. Prior to joining Putney, Ms. Burks was a Senior Product Manager for UCB, Inc., a global biopharmaceutical company. At UCB, Ms. Burks initiated and completed marketing optimization reports to provide ROI on the Cimzia® brand's marketing plans. Previously, Ms. Burks was Senior Product Manager for Allergan, where she developed and executed the 2009 launch plan for Latisse®.
Ms. Burks' veterinary pharmaceutical experience includes four years as Senior Product Manager at Merial where she developed the marketing plan for its Frontline® brand. During her tenure, Frontline® sales increased more than 50% and Frontline® achieved the status of largest brand in animal health history.
Ms. Burks earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Stacey Vaughan
Senior Director, Development and Manufacturing Alliances
Ms. Vaughan has 17 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, focused on technical evaluation of development and manufacturing requirements for portfolio products and oversight of development partner projects to support FDA CVM submissions and into the commercialization stage for the Company’s product pipeline. Formerly, Ms. Vaughan was director of business development at Catalent Pharma Solutions (previously Cardinal) where she led sales and new business development functions for specialty drug delivery technology. Prior to Catalent, she was Manager, Tech Support Services for West Pharmaceutical Services. Ms. Vaughan holds a B.A. in chemistry and communications from Hiram College.
Sally Amirault
Senior Director, Talent & HR
With ten years of human resources experience, Sally sits at the helm of Putney's HR department, where her current focus is on recruiting key management team members to head sales/marketing, business development, and financial operations. Since joining Putney as its first employee in 2005, Sally has assembled a highly qualified team, and with numerous new positions being created, she has an important role. Previously, Sally honed her administrative skills in her position at PSC Industrial Outsourcing. Sally holds a B.S. from Kingston University and a Professional HR certification.
Originally from balmy England, Sally now enjoys the variety of Maine's four seasons with her Boxer, Bob, and her Boston Terrier, Clifford. Her cat, Sugar, chooses not to participate. She is also the mother of three-year old Audrey, who doesn't sleep.
Dr. Nancy Zimmerman, DVM, DABVP
DIrector of Professional Marketing
Dr. Zimmerman is responsible for communication and education with veterinarians and other marketing and outreach programs. Before joining Putney in 2010, Dr. Zimmerman was Director of Medical Support at Banfield Pet Hospital, the nation’s largest chain of veterinary hospitals, where she was responsible for leading a team of veterinarians and technicians who provided technical support and ongoing education for 750 hospital teams on new drugs, equipment, and medical/surgical protocols in the form of continuing education symposiums and wet labs, professional journal articles, online modules and one-on-one case consultations.
Prior to joining the Banfield management team, Dr. Zimmerman practiced veterinary medicine for ten years, first in a small animal and emergency practice in Littleton, CO and then from 2000 to 2005 as a franchisee and small business owner of a Banfield Charter Practice in Greeley, CO.
Dr. Zimmerman graduated cum laude from Kansas State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1995 and holds a B.S. degree (cum laude) in Animal Science. Dr. Zimmerman is also a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in the practice of canine and feline medicine and surgery.
Dr. Simon McGurk
Director of Product Development
As Director of Product Development, Dr. Simon McGurk provides technical leadership and project management to commercialize Putney's diverse portfolio of products. In that role he is responsible for scientific review of new products and the execution of external manufacturing partnerships. Dr. McGurk also works closely with Putney's Regulatory Affairs team to deliver high quality ANADA applications to the FDA's Center of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. McGurk brings over thirteen years of experience in human pharmaceutical product development from his career at Elan Drug Technologies, Inc., where he successfully led global initiatives focused on the development and registration/approval of new chemical entities, life cycle management and generic product opportunities. Dr. McGurk has been awarded numerous patents spanning many aspects of innovative pharmaceutical drug delivery. He is an active member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the Parenteral Drug Association and the Controlled Release Society.
Dr. McGurk earned a Bachelors of Materials Engineering from the University of Liverpool, England and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Nottingham, England.
Derek Mills
Customer Service and Logistics Lead
As Customer Service and Logistics Lead, Derek is responsible for both inbound and outbound logistics, inventory tracking and sales analysis. Customers know him for his efficient, friendly and responsive customer service as every Putney order passes through Derek's hands. Derek developed his excellent communication and logistical coordination skills as promotions coordinator for Citadel Broadcasting, where he worked before coming to Putney. Derek graduated from the University of Maine in 2003 with a B.A. in journalism advertising and a B.Sc. in business marketing.
Derek has seen coffee houses and small concert venues across New England as the drummer for the alt- country band, Gunther Brown. At home, he and his new bride, Stephanie, are helping their two cats, Gizmo and Izzy, learn to live together.
