Jean Hoffman Named Science & Technology Woman to Watch

Date: August 13, 2009

Portland, Maine—August 13, 2009— Jean Hoffman, CEO and founder of Putney, Inc., is the recipient of Mainebiz’s inaugural Science & Technology Woman to Watch award. Mainebiz selected a Woman to Watch in each of six categories:  science and technology, construction, manufacturing, healthcare, woman-owned business and non-profit. Judges said, “Smarts, tenacity and vision,” distinguished the winners from a field of more than 200 entrants.

Hoffman established her entrepreneurial track record with a 29-year career in the global pharmaceutical industry that includes three successful business launches. Most notable is Newport Strategies, which Hoffman built into the world leader in product targeting and sourcing systems for the generic pharmaceutical industry and sold to Thomson Reuters in 2004.

In 2006, Hoffman founded Putney, Inc., a pharmaceutical company focused on the development of generic drugs for pets. Recognizing the potential of this underserved market segment—fully 94% of approved companion animal drugs have no generic equivalent available—Hoffman expects Putney revenues to top $100M by 2012.

Mainebiz publisher, Donna Brassard, said award winners are successful corporate leaders with compelling business histories and strong involvement in the larger business community. “Jean met all the criteria. Besides her leadership at Putney, Jean helped found the state’s Small Enterprise Growth Fund,” says Brassard.

Hoffman, who launched Putney’s first Federal Drug Administration/Center for Veterinary Medicine approved product, carprofen caplets, in June 2009, is honored by the award. “Receiving recognition for leadership in science and technology is gratifying as it acknowledges the complex science involved in Putney’s development of generic drugs. As a business leader, I am especially grateful to the scientists and regulatory leaders that are bringing our broad pipeline of veterinary drugs to market,” says Hoffman.

A reception to honor this year’s recipients will be held on September 10, 2009 at the Portland Museum of Art.

Putney, Inc., is a pharmaceutical company that listens to companion animal veterinarians and responds to their needs—making affordable drugs available, and developing products that address common concerns such as compliance, dosing and palatability. Putney empowers veterinarians with prescribing choices that allow them to pursue the best course of treatment for improved compliance, more satisfied pet owners and happy pets.
