Putney helps veterinarians during tough economic times
Date: October 14, 2009
Portland, Maine—October 14, 2009— Putney, Inc., a pharmaceutical company focused on the development of generic drugs for pets, has underwritten a series of online continuing education courses that outline how generic drugs help veterinary practices deliver high quality medical care even during these challenging economic times.
Putney is sponsoring this resource, available at no charge to veterinary practitioners, to help the veterinary community combat the current economy's effect on animal care. Pet relinquishments are on the rise, and pet owners who are unemployed must often choose between addressing their family's medical needs and those of their beloved pets. "In this economy generic drugs may make a difference between a pet receiving treatment or not," says Jean Hoffman, CEO of Putney.
Pet owners are not the only people struggling. In a recent survey conducted by Putney, one veterinarians commented "Free sources of CE are of greatest value in these tough economic times."
The educational material, which incorporates realistic examples and can be applied directly to clinical practices, fills a void. Although there are many resources offering guidance to veterinarians and pet owners about how to best take care of animals when finances are tight, almost no reference is made to generic drugs. "We feel generics are one fo the most effective and powerful ways of helping veterinarians get savings into the pockets of caring pet owners. Putney is continuing to invest in educational programs and in developing our pipeline of veterinary approved generic drugs," says Hoffman.
The three-part program, which focuses on the safety, efficacy and value of generic drug options, was reviewed and approved by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards Registry of Approved Continuing Education (AAVSB RACE). Authors and topics include: Dr. Peter Rheinstein, retired from the US Food & Drug Administration, "Understanding the Drug Approval Process & FDA Safeguards"; Dr. Margot Karriker, pharmacologist with the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hosptial of the University of California, Davis, "Realizing the Potential of Drug Prescribing Options"; and Gary Glassman, CPA, a partner of Burzenski & Company who specializes in financial management and tax planning for veterinary practices and their owners, "Protecting Pharmacy Revenue."
