Putney's Success at NAVC 2011 Reveals Market Demand for Pet Generics

Date: February 3, 2011

Portland, Maine—February 3, 2011— Putney, Inc., a rapidly growing pet pharmaceutical company, reports that an impressive twenty percent of U.S. veterinarians and veterinarian technicians attending the North American Veterinary Conference 2011 (NAVC) visited the Putney exhibit to learn more about Putney’s FDA Center of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) approved generic products. Putney’s accomplishment of reaching so many veterinarians is particularly impressive considering this is the first time Putney has exhibited at NAVC. Current Putney FDA-CVM approved generics are: Carprofen Caplets and Ketamine HCl for injection. Putney has additional veterinary products under development.

Putney’s Director of Professional Marketing, Dr. Nancy Zimmerman, notes that in today’s tough economy, veterinarian professionals are looking for ways to make veterinary care more affordable to pet owners thereby increasing the numbers of pets that receive treatment. “The veterinarians, hospital managers, and veterinary technicians we spoke with understand that generic medications can not only increase compliance, but can also improve the bottom-line of the practice. Veterinary hospitals that offer cost-effective generic treatments are more likely to treat more pets and keep the prescription in the practice – strengthening the doctor-patient relationship,” said Zimmerman.

Several recent studies confirm that the economic downturn has resulted in a decline in adequate healthcare for companion animals. In a poll conducted by the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues, 45% of responding veterinary team members reported that clients are postponing care for sick pets. A second study conducted by Bayer Healthcare, Animal Health Division found that 51% of responding dog owners and 43% of responding cat owners would take their pet to the veterinarian more often if their veterinarian offered competitive product prices. That study also found that 25% of responding pet owners are always looking for less expensive vet options and would switch to a less expensive veterinarian.

Zimmerman says the responsiveness of veterinarians to Putney’s economic message at NAVC is well-founded and cites a recent survey of VetMetrics data from both large and small veterinary practices across the country. The survey reveals that the introduction of generic carprofen to a veterinary practice increases non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) revenues by 9.4% and drug treatment rates by 14% in just twelve months. “Introduction of generic medicines in the veterinary pharmacy can address some of the economic pressures that currently face pet owners and veterinarians with the ultimate result of improving pet heath care,” says Zimmerman.
