Putney’s Johnson Brings Real-World Veterinary Experience to UNE Classroom
Date: September 20, 2011
Portland, Maine—September 15, 2011— Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, VMD, of Putney, Inc., a rapidly growing pet pharmaceutical company focused on the development and sale of generic prescription medicines for pets, will be a guest lecturer in the Veterinary Pharmacy course offered this Fall at the University of New England (UNE) College of Pharmacy. Dr. Johnson, Putney’s manager of product development and veterinary services, keeps attuned with the needs of companion animals and their owners by continuing to treat patients in a small animal veterinary practice one day a week. She is also active in the scientific community and has had her work on refining rodent laparoscopic surgical techniques published in peer-reviewed medical journals. During Johnson’s lecture, she will leverage her vast practical experience to instruct students on unique practice opportunities in veterinary pharmacy, outline the process of veterinary drug approval, and discuss the emerging role of generic drugs in the veterinary pharmacy.
Dr. Cory Theberge, Ph. D., assistant professor at UNE College of Pharmacy, says Dr. Johnson’s contribution will improve his students’ understanding of and interest in veterinary pharmacy as a potential career. “Dr. Johnson is an engaging instructor who brings her hands-on experience directly into the classroom. It’s the kind of concrete information that provides our students with a back stage glimpse into the nuances of veterinary pharmacy work,” says Theberge.
UNE’s Veterinary Pharmacy course runs during the fall 2011 term, ending on December 9th.
